Horses once played a vital role on Nantucket , providing transportation, farming power, and entertainment, particularly during the 19th century. Harness racing was even a spectator sport in the mid to late 19th century, with races centered at the Fairgrounds. But as motorized vehicles and equipment become more prevalent, and as land became more valuable, horses began to disappear from the island. Save for a very few private stables, horses are hard to find nowadays.
